Well, voltage tends to confuse circuits which are expecting a trigger.
(retriggering and all other sorts of garbage) If anything, put the output
of the envelope follower through a schmitt trigger to get a uniform pulse.
Otherwise you're just taking a guess with what the hysteris level is.
