which Paia unit is better?...

I built the tube mic preamp and am very happy with it. It won't give you
monster crunch distortion but it provides great, subtle distortion.

The kit provides phantom power toggle, a balance control between tube
amp and solid state, a polarity switch (dramatically effects single
ended signal) and balanced i/o.

I highly recommend making your own power supply for the unit and adding
a front panel pot for the "symmetry" control that effects the bias of
the tube input. This provides significant control of the distortion
quality.

Its a great device for < $100.

Regards,

Mike
