I seem to remember the author saying in the original Circuit Cellar Ink
article that he deliberately used readily available stuff. There were two
oddballs in the design, one of which is on every '486 motherboard ever made
(or something like that). Check the website and/or try e-mailing him. I
roughly calculated that even if you bought the PC board and the hard to get
chips from him, the total cost (minus enclosure, probes, etc.) would be
well under $200--insanely cheap for a device like this!
