4016, switching audio and VCO signals

The same for me. I use them, and many synth manufacturers did use them,
too.
There are some caveat's, like charge being coupled into the audio path at
fast
switching, capacitance across the chip that would decrease attenuation in
off-state
in high impedance applications, or distortion because of the nonlinear
resistance
of the switch in on-state (but this would only be a problem in low
impedance
applications, where the on-resistance is not musch smaller than the load
resistance ... in one word, you cannot use it blindly in any application,
but it's
still a good, and unexpensive, component.
Too bad that it can only handle 15V total. That's why I use discrete JFETs
for switching in most of my +/-15V circuits.
