If you use parts that are in 'lots' of other things, then
there will always be a few for the individual constructor.
For a manufacturer, the problem is entirely different.

I notice some people (like Aries) are making surface mount 
carrier boards with dip pins around them. If anyone sees a cheap 
source of these, let us know. Mouser has them at $5 or so.
(and for a mere $86, a universal zif soic to dip adaptor,
which I must admit would be handy for prototyping!)
