Yes, I was speaking to one of the Maxim salespeople the other
day, complaining that most of their new offerings were only
available in surface-mount packages. (Fine for cell phones
and such, but miserable for routine breadboarding!)
He pointed out that none of their products that come in
DIP packages will ever be obsoleted, so even if the newest
technology isn't offered in DIPs, at least the old stuff won't
disappear.
Maxim has seen unbelievable growth and stability in the last
decade, so perhaps their promise of non-obsolescence may
actually be good for another ten or twenty years.
I worry, to, about the Exar XR-2206 function generator IC, a
single source item. Exar claims that it is their "biggest selling"
IC, but I don't trust that it will last forever. Another worry is the
CA3096 transistor array, which seems to just barely hold on
from the old RCA days. But it is now a Harris part, and I wouldn't
trust them to keep anything that doesn't make huge profits.
