There's a series of books by Graf and Sheets called "Encyclopedia of
Electronic Circuits"... There's 6 or more volumes, and I don't remember which
volume had the info, but I recall seeing schematics for tape play and record
preamps in one of them.   If anyone is interested in info or the schematics,
let me know and look for them.  

Likewise, if you want exactly which volume the schemo's are in, let me know
and I'll dig the books out of storage.
