I've used thousands of DIP IC sockets without any problem; some of them in
analog electronics equipment now over 20 years old.  The important thing is
to use good quality ones, such as machined-pin sockets with gold plated
contacts, from a reputable manufacturer such as Augat or Andon.  Avoid
cheap sockets with one stamped, tin plated contact per pin.
