PCB Kits?

Hello,
I plan to hand-design a few VCO, VCF, and ADSR circuits for a modular
synthesizer. For the sake of convenience and reliability, I want to
have a decent circuit board. In most cases, I'll need only one
circuit board for each unit; I do not plan to make 7 identical VCOs, for
instance. A few questions:
1) Which modules will perform reliably using point-to-point wiring?
Reliable tracking is unimportant, but I do not want to sacrifice much
sound quality. (I plan to have VCOs, VCFs, VCAs, ring mod, LFOs,
ADSRs)
2) Can you recommend a PCB kit for me? I've seen one in Mouser, and a
cheaper one in Jameco that uses a negative film process. Are these
any
good?
3) How does "direct etch" work? Is this what I need? Do I need a kit
to direct etch, or can I just buy a few supplies?
Thanks for your help.
Lucas
