The best thunder patch I've come up with does not use noise either. I did it
on an OB-8, with all 16 oscillators in unison mode, at the lowest possible
frequency, pulse wave outputs, and PWM by sample and hold. The oscillators
initial pulse width is such that they go silent occaisionally (not all at
once, however). They crackle in and out against each other. The VCF is set
for a long release so that the sound goes from crisp to muffled after
several seconds.

This patch is so realistic that it sounds like a sampler playing a thunder
sample. Freaks people out, especially other synthesists.:) To me, noise
through a filter sounds like wind perhaps, but *never* thunder.

And my 18-inchers are Peaveys. :)
