Nothing against the 2000 (how could I say anything against an SSM chip ...),
but why should a single ended NR be better than a good compander system ?
IMO, the only problem with BBD companders is that they all use the slow
attack NE571 chips.
The Roland VP330 shows how to build a much better  compander from cheap
standard circuits. Well, an obsolete japanese VCA there, but I have used
an LM13700 instead, and it works fine. See my Frequency Shifter schemos
for details. And remember this is a cheap and dirty circuit; you can even
improove
it by using high quality VCAs.
