Looking for exciter schematics

There was an exciter-like device in Electronic Musician years ago which was
a fairly straightforward distort-and-EQ-it-type circuit. Somebody from
Aphex wrote in to "remind" everyone that their design was patented, blah
blah blah. So the question is--was the design too close, or was Aphex just
blowing smoke?
