Depends on the complexity of your original circuit.
If you use the pot directly as attenuator, you're right.
If you use the pot to control a VCA (because you want
voltage contol, or for some other reason), the additional
ckt is next to zero. You need a single pnp transistor to
control a 3080 with a positive-only CV anyway, and it's just
a matter of biasing two transistors to make one work from
a certain voltage (coresponding to 12 o clock position) 
upward, and the other obe downward.
