Hi Debby, Gene
Thanks for the compliments on my VCO. Not long ago I pulled the original
drawing for this circuit out of my file. I hadn't seen it for a LONG time,
and I thought geez, this is a really simple design!
My current interest in reviving my work on analog synths is largely due to
my reading of Mark Vail's book last winter, a book your name appears in at
length. Looks like you've had some interesting experiences with Moogs,
particularly Emerson's. Want to trade jobs?
I first saw the Roland 700 at a Chicago NAMM show, and I remember being
impressed by that particular product. I also remember visiting some booth
at NAMM, and being introduced to the designer for the company, and looking
at a schematic of their VCO, and it was nearly an exact copy of mine. I'm
sure that guy read Electonotes. I honestly can't remember if the VCO
design discussion happened at the Roland booth. or some other booth, as I
went to NAMM a number of years during the '70s.
Also at NAMM, I went into the Moog booth with a friend. We went to a
corner where a modular system was set up and running, and Bob Moog was
standing a few feet away, talking to someone. I started turning knobs on
the 960, and in a few minutes I had set it up to do a close approximation
to the ending riff from Karn Evil 9. I started it running, and Bob turn
around with a smile and said something like "That sounds familiar"!
