I agree. 90% of my VCAs are linear, and 90% of my envelope
generators have (exponential) RC shapes. Perfect match.
BTW, the remaining 10% of my VCA's are *not* "exponential"
either. I rather use them to "bend" the response of some
potentiometer into the right shape, like "reverse log" for
resonance potentiometers, for example.

I don't think so. You're right about trimming, but resolution
might be a problem. Linear steps at the DAC output will
cause equally spaced *level* (dB) steps with an exponential
VCA, which is a good thing to avoid zipper noise at one
end of the control range.
Unless you have a lot of bits of resolution  in your digital 
envelopes, of course ...
