well the best thing, really, is to buy some of each type & get a feel for it.
Size is a useful indicator too. The best intro to capacitors is in
"Troubleshooting
Analog Circuits" by R.A. Pease. Not a synth book as such, but FULL of wisdom.
One good thing I saw here was that there are 2 types of 'ceramic' capacitor, one
fairly precise, the other much physically smaller for the same value but with
unbelievably bad temp coefficients, no precision, and wacky volt/cap variance.
