Linear response VCA's

I've finally gotten my life in order to attack the modular synth project
I've been promising myself for years. However, I am stumbling over a few
questions that I hope can be answered here:
Are there situations in which purely linear response is desirable in a VCA?
My envelope generators and LFOs are digital - using an embedded
microcontroller, I can easily allow for both linear and exponential
response in the software of the envelope generator. And I can see
situations in which this may be a desirable feature.
The VCA is another matter. While I like the "universality" of having
separate expo and linear cv inputs, I'm planning on having a lot of these
things (probably starting with six), so I don't want to give up a lot of
board space or panel space on functions that I wouldn't use.
So if someone has any opinions on the matter, I look forward to hearing them.
TIA
Mike Maloney
