there are 'xylophone' like devices made from 3 inch plastic spouting, 
played by whacking with a thong on the end.
Any physical system can be excited by a speaker etc and then picked up again,
like in a guitar spring reverb box.
An amusing thing is to amplify the output from a semiacoustic as a radio etc
plays.
No reason why more interesting resonant systems should be incorporated in a 
modular, even sharpened up by judicious feedback.
