I guess actual flames would be the best light source for an LDR-based
interface. 

And really, when you get down to it, what could possibly be better?

You could drive a lamp with an audio signal, the filament can work as
a filter pole, your hand determines the audio signal level on an LDR,
use that signal to drive a second lamp nearby working as a second
pole, a second LDR, and feed back.  Instant hand-controlled filter.
