I purchased and constructed this kit and it is fun. I don't really
know how it works as I am a novice, but when you plug a guitar into
it, some of the pitch-shifted modes sound like ring modulation. I
ditched the condenser element and the speaker and put 1/4 inch jacks
in their places. The robot voice is suprisingly intelligible for such
a cheap circuit. The only real problem with it as far as recording or
other hi-fi situations go is that it produces a high-pitched ringing
whenever it is turned on (at least mine does) but that can be almost
omited with a little e.q. It has a vibrato mode which can be used with
any of the pitch-shift levels as well as the robot mode.
When I read that catalog entry, it didn't really make sense to me
and I don't think it really has all of those things in it (VCO, VCA,
and especially VCF). In fact I don't even know how those three things
would really even apply to this thing. I was just happy to be able to
get a robot voice and some kind of funny/weird pitch shifter for
cheap. It does indeed sound neat with drums. It gives a lo-fi/low
sampling rate digital recorded sound to things when it is pitch
shifting or even when you have it set to no shift.
