Ribbon Controller

Hi all,
       Just a thought off the top of my head, but how about using a
high-frequency signal through the ribbon/whatever. A band-pass filter
centred on the frequency, and a rectifier to extract the amplitude.
maybe this will remove any hum problems ?.
