Good choice! The Wave's been one of my faves since I worked in a studio
with the 2.3 and Waveterm ten years ago. It sounds like they've got the
whole thing boiled down to three VLSI chips. This is not something you can
do yourself since VLSI work requires tens of thousands of dollars each
"turn", but FPGAs and PLDs are user programmable and let you put a lot of
jellybean TTL into a single multipin chip. My DIY work these days is
centered around the Philips CPLD chip (www.coolpld.com).
