dumbass soldering tool questions

I have the Digi-Key catalog in my lap (Mouser doen't have the connectors I
need and Allied keeps sending me these wack cd-roms I don't want -- I
haven't received a paper catalog since I moved), and I am planning on
ordering various electronic parts from them. Has anyone had any problems
dealing with Digi-Key??
Anyway, I am also looking to buy two tools. First, I would like to get a
temperature controlled soldering iron. I am leaning towards the Weller
WTCPT. It's $134.27 -- is that a good price?? I would prefer something
less expensive. Is it only good for PCB use, or is it powerful enough to
build cables??
Weller also lists several other models that are far less expensive called
"fixed temperature units." What do they mean by that?? Don't they really
mean constant heat??
The second tool I am looking for is a device to help me desolder multipin
components without destroying everything. I already have a Paladin
desoldering pump (it's basically a vacuum using spring loaded plunger).
What am looking for I believe is called an "IC Extractor" -- basically it's
a puller for small electronic parts. Any ideas??
PEACE OUT :)
