Well, you could factor in hundreds of thousands of dollars in studio
costs, marketing, promotions, tour support and overhead, amortized
across the cost of each unit, and that gets you pretty close to the
wholesale cost. Not to mention the millions invested in acts that never
sell a copy, recouped through the very few acts that do actually make
it.

That's exactly right--most people don't. Hence why the record companies
don't, either. Sure, they shove a lot of crap down our throats, but
ultimately they've got to sell what people are going to buy, or they're
out of business.

I'll agree with you on the modular synths--Nord or no Nord, you just
can't get the sound elsewhere. The analog tape thing, though, I don't
know...
