The thing to do here is to find one or more transformers with taps and wire 
up some switching arrangement to give a range of voltages.... then just feed 
to a standard full wave bridge rectifier..

easier, but more expensive, is to use a variac (or other brand) variable
auto transformer, remembering that this does not isolate from the mains, 
and feed this to a 500v transformer and rectifier.. just adjust the variac
to taste....

Maybe you will end up with the world's second thermionic modular synth!
