Y-ellow Steven.
It is someone's idea of a standard. I can't remember who but If
memory serves it originated in the European atomotive industry. We were all
enouraged to change our notation to it some time in the late 70s early 80s I
think. Some kind of attempt to standardize technical documentation. You
replace the decemal place with the multiplier. Thus 2.2meg becomes 2m2. 4.7K
becomes 4K7. etc. 3.3 ohm becomes 3R3. 100 ohms is written 100R In essence
you put the number round the multiplier. I think it was in the same push for
convention that they tried to make us all change our documentation to show
resistors as square boxes with leads. Did anyone beside Elektor take up the
offer?
Hope this helps.
