This depends on the nature of the input signals.  With oscillator
waveforms, you're pretty much right, but with external audio, squaring
(i.e., running the same input into both sides of a ring mod) can be quite
nice.  It's quite different from merely revving it up an octave with a
harmonizer, because the inharmonicities multiply.  Spoken word is
particularly good--you get a lovely distorted Donald Duck-ish sound.
