For prototyping I use two methods;
1. Veroboard (0.1'' matrix board) Love the stuff. Smells nice as well.
2. When I used to work for Marconi, we used copperclad board, to which
we stuck these little bits of glass fibre PCBs. These little PCBs had
just one package space on them, say a 14-pin DIL outline. The
connections were made by speed wire pen or ordinary single core bell
wire. The copper cladding on the PCB was connected up to ground, so it
had good effect on noise and so on. Plus you could with a knife and
soldering iron cut out sections of it for routing power around. Spray
the lot with thick laquer and it would survive the worst. The little
bits of PCB were quite expensive but you could really pack them in.
