I generally use an etched layout-equivalent of a solder-less breadboard, and
solder on its copper side. Sometimes I also go straight from design to pcb,
though this is a case of who I know, so it doesn't cost me.  Occasionally I
will still use the solderless breadboard, though this is more for
experimenting than prototyping.
