Power supplies: are they just available to buy?

Is that me???
Any rate, my personal favorite supply is the Elpac Model WM220-1. From Newark Electronics. About $80. It is
fully enclosed in a plastic case about 5 x 3 x 2 inches. Has a LONG power cord and a LONG output cord, using a 5 pin DIN (!!!!DANGER WILL ROBINSON!!!).
These are linears, the +5V is like 3 amps, with +12 and -12 at 500ma. There are others (WM-xxx) as well.
For true DIY hacking, nothing beats a good low noise linear "bench" supply. I use a Leader LPS152 (the 151
is the smaller unit, OK for synth stuff). It is a variable tracking supply:
0-6V @5A
0-25V @1A (two of them)
It was like $325 new, but I bought it 9 years ago and it will last 30 more! So I figure 10$/year for a top-end
unit is a good deal!
For most analog synth stuff, 500ma is PLENTY. That's about 30 CEM chips + 10 quad op amps.

Yes, there IS quite a few companies that make what is called a solid power
supply. It is just a black box, with an input to the wall voltage and outputs
for the corresponding voltages such as +-15 volts... The only problem with them
is that i THINK they are switching power supplies, but perhaps Paul could
elaborate on this. I have used a good many of these at where i work to set up
voltages for data collection to send power to switches and such. Analog Devices
makes a bunch of them, as does Sola Solids. They are a little pricey (about
35-40 dollars, depending on the current sourcing) but they make my life much
easier. I personally have never tried to use them to source a frequency
dependent circuit such as an analog synth vco, so i cant comment on the voltage
stability of these units, but they interest me for use in synths also.
