Y-ellow Alex 'n' all.
I consider the awe to be very much a synth-diy. Anyone who's seen my
ADICT system would understand this. It's a long story. Whilst I don't own an
AWE 64 I'm led to believe that hardware wise, there is little difference
between that and an AWE32. Since the great majority, at least if not all,
the improvements over the 32 are in software. Those issues asside, and from
what I can gather from the rather sketchy details about the EMU8000 chip, it
would seem that S/PDIF is a hard-wired feature of the chip.
The only real option you have is to wire it up and find out. No special
cable is required if it's under about 3 feet. Ordinary shielded audio cable
should do. Stick an RCA plug on one end and you need to wire the shield to
ground. This is pretty easy to work out. Simply find out which of the two
pins is connected to ground. Use your avo. (nice choice) Carefully solder
the shield to that pin and the hot-wire to the other. Whack the RCA into the
back of your digital mixer or DAT machine and stick it on record. Now when
you make a sound on yur EMU8000 you should hear it through the DAT machine.
Unless your soldering with a sonic lance, or a blow torch, I wouldn't worry
too much about a warrantee job. In the case of Creati-flabs, it's generally
a case of, "What warrantee?" Just be careful not to touch anything and cause
static damage. Remember. Your taking all the risks here. Er just as a final
check you should make sure that the cable isn't shorted anywhere.
But in theory at least, The only difference should be that Creati-flabs
saved .002 of a cent by not installing the pins to connect S/PDIF to.
Hope this helps.
