Computer control is certainly an option but it can get expensive 
really quickly.  The beauty of a full modular system is that you have 
complete freedom to route from anything to anything ( even if it 
doesn't make sense at the time )<grin>

Also, having the modules plugged into a common backplane diesn't 
really leave a lot of room for knobs and since we are so amazingly 
sensitive to frequency, using A/D/A conversion gets really expensive 
really fast.

There are a number of commercial synths that have done this but there 
are always limitations - search the archives and you will see that 
there are always writeups on getting to this or that patch point by 
soldering a wire here...
