a modest proposal...

True - and there is something wonderfully visceral about grabbing a
handful of patch cords and pulling everything out of the synth - many
times I have been trying to "get that sound" only to yank the whole rats
nest out and start over again...
But - the plugs are sooo cheap that if one fails, you can take some
scissors, nip it off and crimp a new one on in a minute and be out $0.20
or so.
If you kept the impedance low enough, you could do some longish runs in
the studio without any shielding problems - maybe use these as a
secondary standard for interconnection between workstations, synths and
amps and mixers - feed them through a voltage follower and 10K Ohm
resistor directly into the current summing input of an inverting op-amp
and you will keep the impedance almost zero - make it current fed rather
than voltage fed.
Hal Chamberlain suggested this idea for bussing modules together in
MAoMP.
