How about splitting the difference here?  Use an "L" bracket mount with
right angle pots, but when you want more than one column of pots, then
you have to do some soldering...

The reason I say this is that mounting the PCB parallel to the panel
always reduces the density of knobs, and if there's anything that makes
me feel like I'm getting my money's worth, it's a high knob/U ratio. 
Personally, I like a knob/U ratio of 15 or more.
