I use this scheme as well. I built an interface module which has 7 jacks
(4 cv, 1 pedal, 1 rocker pedal, 1 audio in w/amplifier), and it's very handy.
The CV jacks are simple wire connections, so they're in/out. The two pedals
provide gate and CV from standard synth pedals, and the audio input
amplifies an external signal up to around 10vpp so I can use it properly.
Only problem is, since it was a very early design, I didn't debounce the
footswitch! So my gate signal is a little noisy on the attack. :-(
But heck, for EG triggering, it's close enough.
Back to our topic - using custom cables is an interesting idea, and I agree
it would help novices out, but IMHO it's more trouble than it's worth.
