This sounds like a great idea.. I certainly couldn't afford a
huge system all at once, but something like this, where modules come on
different paychecks, is a great idea that should make this affordable for
everyone, including the college students who only work 12 hours a week.
=)
As for the choice of modules, I think the VCF should come first;
if nothing else, you can run other things through it. It's probably the
most stand-alone module in a synthesizer. As opposed to the VCO, it
should also be simpler to build and troubleshoot. After that, it's all a
toss up; I'd recommend saving the VCO until later.. But my focus i na
modular is first on sound processing, second on actual sound creation.
Others' mileage may vary. I think the VCF first idea works for both camps
though, if "getting it up and useful ASAFP" is a concern.
For the record, I'm all for a choice in case styles; a 3u rack
size + a larger stand-alone option seem like a good pair. I'm not sure
what I'd take personally (probably the rack.. for portability), but for
people who don't play out with their modular gear..
Anyway, there's my $.05. I love the idea of a module per month,
and if it happens, sign me up! =)
