.........can't quite see what is wanted here, is he seeking an envelope follower
type of thing? because if so, since he likes hacking up pedals, taking a
compressor
based on led/ldr system and using the ldr instead of the pot could work.....
anyone using this approach & wanting to modify the attack & decay of the
envelope control 
can use a reverb unit on the controlling audio signal.....at last a use for
all those
horrible noisy old echo/reverb units.......
