Sounds like a lot of the reasons that I went with the sizes that I did.
I'm using 8.75" height, with a multiple of 2" width. This allows for
cabinet mounting, or rack mounting with a pair of 1.5" ears on each end.
The 2" width I selected allows for horizontal mounting of a jack and a pot
with a decent size knob. It allows large fingers to not have to fight with
plugs when turning the knobs.
Size turns out somewhere between the FrakRak from PAiA and the DigiSound.
It is also very close to the Moog size panels.
