Hard to tell. I have not dug deep enough into the theory of BJTs used as

VC resistors.
Spice analysis of the one-transistor circuit shows a quite normal VCA
funcion for one quadrant, but quite poor attenuation for the other
quadrant. So you get very unsymmetric output signals - similar to an
overdriven tube stage.

The two-transistor circuit shows an almost symmetrical attenuation.

Both circuits have rather high distortion.
