Good books for beginners? And some suggestions..

Is that book by Wells?  If so, I've seen it in my library as well and 
I think it's a great book.  Very dated, but great.  As I recall, it 
covers quite a bit about all sorts of interesting things (like 
overtones generated by various types of modulation) and it has 
exercises for each chapter.  Well worth the money to make a photocopy 
of it.
