For my JH-3 Modular I had bought nice RadiOhm Pots for
less than DM 1,- ($0.50), and that was *including* knobs. !
Unfortunately, this source isn't available anymore. But if
you buy in hundreds, it's not unlikely to get similar deals.

Yes, that's the least thing you can do.
I'd even consider routing separate GND lines to each column
of potentiometers, to avoid crosstalk over a common GND line.
Noise would be an issue as well: On the EMS, you only have
a few pins plugged in at a time, but with the potentiometer
matrix, thermal noise from unused inputs would contribute
as well.

And his famous "Myths" page helped me to look at certain
things differently.
