Cheers Haible,
I definitely think doing the matrix this way has obvious
advantages, and I've been toying with this scheme for a while now.
I can buy some nice pots here (same ones used on Serge panels),for
about $2 (CDN) each,so 256x2=$512.00 still too costly !
I've found some nice mod pots(Allen Bradley) at a surplus center that
are physically smaller for $0.50 ea.I'm trying to swing a deal with
the owner to buy out the lot.
Also ,anyone building such a beast SHOULD buffer both ends to avoid
interaction when making your settings.Hinton Instruments has details
on this on their EMS mods section of their site.
Another cool mod for the VCS3 (MK I) that I've just completed is
based around the Mark II's CH2 output switch marked "Env".What this
basically does is it routes whatever you put into CH2 to the trigger
on the trapezoid .EMS figured alot of people use their machines in
mono so they added this very cool feature in the MKII.It is a trigger
output though as the amp is ac coupled,so anyone thinking this could
replace a proper "gate" input forget it.Hinton have a nice cct. for
this if needed.
I will post the how to's some time this week on my crumby web page.
I've got plenty of other EMS goodies in store so stay tuned hardcore
fans.
BTW,this is a great beginners project, and a good way to get
your friends started soldering all those pots ! (read cheap labour)

Tip no.1
Those verniers feel rough ? Clean the pots (open frame mkII's from
rear:sealed mk I's from front in shaft barrel, soak up excess with
kleenex.Super PPE seems like a nice Cramolin clone.
