EMS Matrix idea

Ok, here comes idea #568 to replace the expensive patchmatrix in
a VCS-3 clone:

Build a matrix from 256  *potentiometers*, and be less expensive than
a patchmatrix or an array of 256 switches.

I think such a matrix could be built from less than 200 dollars
components
cost.
The pros and cons of such a solution would be obvious:
Ultimate control over your signal and modulation routings,
but more difficult to recognize your last setting at a glance.
