Serge Series 76 panel racks used Xeroxed labels stuck to aluminum panels
with a clear adhesive overlay. The ones I have seen are still look good
after twenty years. Us a clay coated paper and they won't yellow. The
plastic overlay is called "laminating sheets" and are available at office
supply stores. Get the permanent ones not the removable book covers (poor
adhesive).
You can get various label papers at printer supply stores. They are self
adhesive and come in all colors including gold and silver. They have a
nitrocellulous (sp?) coating to prep them for offset ink. That can be
dissolved off with acetone and then you can laser print on them. Once
covered with the laminating sheet, they hold up very well.
