The platters are 14 inches in diameter. 3mm thick aluminium pre-coated both
sides with a magnetic recording surface. You get the motor to spin 'em up
and you could replace the head with a tape-recorder head. Remember that
unlike an audio tape machine, there is only a single head on a disk drive. A
tape recorder pre-erases the tape before recording a new signal. However,
using a disk drive, you will simply be moving the particles. What also seems
to be neglected here is that you will also need to pre-bias the substrate.
This is normally done in the erase process on a tape recorder. However, with
only a single head, this could not be done.
