In a pinch, you can cut the top off a metal can transistor and make it 
 a phototransistor.  I remember doing this once to trigger an alarm
 from a panel light on a thermal chamber.  Seems like a 9V battery,
 a Sonalert and bare twisted wires was the rest of it.
