.....now for the experimentally minded why not a trigger that is derived from
a photodiode that can be attached onto any front panel diode?

One thing you could do then is to trigger a warning siren when your 
level meter on the power amp goes off scale, for example.
And people with a sequencer like the roland 104 could do amazing 
things without having to hack.(just sold my 104.....sob!)
