                             ^^^^^^^^^^^^ Ugh. I'd suggest Delphi as 
a much better alternative, being a combination between a nice rapid 
development environment but having a native code compiler capable of 
going as low level as you desire.

> things out before building them in hardware.

Prototyping is very practical, it takes a matter of a couple of hours 
to implement most modules, as opposed to days or more in hardware.
