You are using a PAIA Fatman that uses a MIDI data stream huh? I had a
similar problem using a PAIA MIDI-CV controller maybe 8 years ago and it
was a real problem for me too. I was also using Cakewalk and it made my
MIDI-CV hang up when I play back. It appeared that the MIDI data
originator (in my case Cakewalk) was sending MIDI realtime timer messages
in the MIDI data stream. My version of Cakewalk had an output filter that
allows you to turn that stuff off so I used it and my problem went away. I
don't know if current versions of Cakewalk have it now because Twelve Tone
had a bad habit of dropping features with new releases.

The upshot of all this is that I had no choice but to suspect the MIDI-CV
unit was incompletely programmed or buggy such that it was choking on some
MIDI data. I later scrapped using it in favor of a more reliable homebuilt
digital connection.
