   The two halves of the pickup are connected by a little metal bow or 
   bridge, just in front of the  part where the pedal comes in.

Yup, the 200 has that too.

   Very few gain, but quite a lot of hum nevertheless!

Something seems broken.  My 200 has only a small amount of hum, which
is pretty much swamped out by the hiss.  Maybe the power supply?

   Funny thing, btw: The *distortion* was most probably caused by a wrong 
   speaker! The previous owner had replaced a defective one by a 4Ohm
   type. 

The 200 has two 16 ohm speakers in parallel.  Hmmm.

Another idea: With a split pickup you can subtract the signals to
cancel background hum.
